Collier County World Polio Day – October 24, 2019

October 22, 2019 – The Rotary Club of Naples Bay, along with several Collier County Rotary clubs, join Rotary International in the fight for a polio-free world.  A proclamation was presented Tuesday morning in honor of World Polio Day, which will be recognized Thursday, Oct. 24, in Collier County, Florida.

Board of Commissioners’ of Collier County presented the proclamation to members of the Rotary Club of Naples Bay. The proclamation said Rotary launched PolioPlus in 1985, and in 1988 helped establish the Global Polio Eradication Initiative — which includes the World Health Organization, U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, UNICEF and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation — to immunize children around the world against polio.

The proclamation went on to state that “polio cases have dropped by 99.9 percent since 1989, and the world stands on the threshold of eradicating the disease …” and that “Rotary has contributed more than $1.9 billion and countless volunteer hours to protecting more than 2.5 billion children in 122 countries.”
