Dictionaries

Staffing a polling place during an election

rotary peace pole project

Rotary provides dictionaries to each third grader in Collier County. Each year Rotarians from the Rotary Club of Naples Bay give dictionaries to every third grader in four elementary schools: Mike Davis Elementary School, Sea Gate Elementary School, Shadow Lawn Elementary School and Sable Palms Elementary School. It is exhilarating to see their faces as they have their very own dictionary and can write their name on the inside cover of their first dictionary.

rotary peace pole project

Sponsored by: The Rotary Club of Naples Bay and The Rotary Club of Naples Collier

These two clubs joined forces to give the Naples Botanical Garden a Peace Pole with languages of locations at the 26th parallel around the Earth. These languages are: Arabic, Bengali Chinese, English, Hawaiian, Hindi Japanese and Spanish. They are arranged vertically on the four sides of the Peace pole. In addition there is a small brass plate in Braille. The message in each of these languages is the same: “May Peace Prevail on Earth.” The dedication ceremony was held Saturday, April 6th in the Kapnick Center of the Naples Botanical Garden. Plans are to have another ceremony when a decision has been made as to in what Garden the pole is to be place on a more permanent basis.

President Tim Miller of the Rotary Club of Naples Bay described the project and the hope that it will remind visitors of its message. He then showed a video presentation about Peace, and the service of Rotary throughout the world. The Shroud was removed and the Peace Pole was given over to Kara Laufer, Director of Business Development, at the Naples Botanical Garden.

Rotary has sponsored Peace Poles all over the world as an effort to keep the goal of Peace on the Earth visible wherever one may be.

Staffing a polling place during an election

One of our service projects was staffing a polling place during the Presidential election. Club members were the poll workers at North Naples Baptist Church. They had to arise around 4:30 AM to get to the location by 6:00 AM. They could not leave the polling location until given the “all clear” by the clerk. They were then given that signal about 8:00 PM when they could leave. So they were able to arrive home by sometime around 8:30 PM. It was a long day, but they had a great time providing a service and turning their pay over to the Rotary Club of Naples Bay as a fund-raising event. Pictures are not allowed at the polling place. So we have none to show. Those who served were: Ruth and Ken Ruskin; Gabe Irizzary; Wayne Dahlstrom; Roger Dick; Bill Jones; Joel Miller; President, Tim Miller; Jeffrey Siegel; Larry Wright, and his wife, Lorna Gauthier. But, in addition to this, we were supported by Chris Price, who brought breakfast, Dennis Combs who arranged for lunch, and Linda Jakes, who arranged for pizza for supper. It was teamwork all the way.
