Speaker Series Update - February 8

Feb 08, 2022 – Executive Director Jeri Goetz – Pan-Florida Challenge presentation was very well received and supported by the Rotarians and guests. She oversees all day-to-day operations of the organization. Her background over 30 years of experience working in the nonprofit industry along with being from North Palm Beach, Florida alone prepared her to head the Pan-Florida Challenge. It was her ties in Boston with high level positions in such places as the Boston Lyric Opera, along with having graduated from Boston College with a Bachelor’s Degree in Marketing gave her insight for the first time about helping to organize the Pan-Florida Challenge in Florida model after the Pan-Mass Challenge started in 1980.  Jeri’s event started in 2014 when founder and chairman, Ed Mullen along with three other riders completed a 360 miles relay across Florida to provide 134,000 meals for children in Haiti. The focus soon turned to the cancer and hunger epidemic happening right here in Florida. Thus, the solution was the beginning of Pan-Florida Challenge, an organization dedicated to the mission of feeding food insecure children throughout the community. The Pan-Florida Challenge Board of Directors were convinced enough scientific research was done that found a proven link between a lack of nutrition, or poor nutrition, and an increased risk of developing cancer. Today, Pan-Florida Challenge partners with Moffitt Cancer Center and local cancer organizations to fund cancer prevention research, education, and patient support. Jeri’s proudly added the Pan-Florida ride is their major fundraising initiative which takes place annually in March. Over 300 riders are expected to ride on March 26 – 27, 2020, in order to provide elementary schools with Power Packs (to date, the organization has provided more than six million meals) to the undernourished children throughout Florida. Finally, Jeri pointed out that riders come from not only all over Florida, but across the country as well. Equally important, all money raised by riders will go directly to supporting cancer prevention research and providing food for kids in need.
